Cartmel Priory Situated in the picturesque village of Cartmel between Haverthwaite and Grange- over- Sands. The village square and main street retain their centuries- old character, free of modern development.
Colony Candles(Lindal) Watch candles being produced at this modern plant and experience the wonderful aromatic smells in the extensive gift shop offering a wide range of unusual decorative and functional wares quite apart from the enormous variety of candles. Dock Museum (Barrow- in- Furness) Traces the history of Barrow- in- Furness as a major shipbuilding centre from the 1800's to the present time. Audio/visual presentations, models and dioramas illustrate the processes involved and the famous passenger liners and warships of the past built at the Vickers shipyard which to this day is involved in the building and refitting of the warships and nuclear submarines of the Royal Navy. Furness Abbey(near Barrow- in- Furness) Impressive substantial remains of 700 year old Cistercian monastery of striking red sandstone. English Heritage site. Details 01229 - 823420.
Holker Hall(near Cark- in- Cartmel) A stately home dating from 16th century with extensive gardens, Deer Park, Lakeland Motor Museum and bird of prey centre. Host to a Garden Festival in May and vintage motor rallies and other events during the year. Situated on the B5278 near Cark.
South Lakes Animal Park(Dalton- in- Furness) One of Europe's leading wildlife parks involved in the conservation of endangered species including tigers, white rhino. and pandas. Between Newby Bridge and Barrow- in- Furness. Details (01229) 466086.
Laurel and Hardy Museum(Ulverston) This bustling market town was the birthplace of Stanley Jefferson better known as Stan Laurel and here is the only museum dedicated to the famous comedy duo.
Grange- over- Sands A very pleasant Victorian- style seaside town with Promenade, park and lake. Several small but high quality shops including Higginsons (Award- Winning Butcher) and Hazelmere Bakery (an exceptional range of cakes,pastries,pies and bread) both highly recommended.
Flookburgh Annual Steam Rally held on the airfield of this small village.
